The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iaia arrived in 2010 as one of the first releases from Zeromolecole. Stefania Marzufero Boni had spent years studying materials when she turned her attention to something most niche perfumers avoid: an unapologetic strawberry. Not a hint, not an accent, but a bright and tart fruit note that sits front and center. The synthetic facets are acknowledged rather than hidden, giving the strawberry a vibrancy that feels immediate and direct. This is a fragrance that places a recognizable sweetness at its heart, using it as a foundation rather than an afterthought. The composition doesn't retreat from the charge of sweetness but leans into it, treating the strawberry as a serious material rather than a passing trend.
What makes Iaia unusual isn't the strawberry itself. Fruity notes appear in plenty of fragrances. It's the combination with caramel and vanilla that shifts the register from fresh to edible, while the overall structure prevents it from becoming overly sweet. Hazelnut and vanilla arrive together beneath the caramel, creating a warmth that deepens the composition. Gingerbread appears in the heart, adding a layer of subtle spiced warmth that keeps the heart from feeling lightweight.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and bright, strawberry bursting through with a tartness that can border on sharp. Within minutes the raspberry emerges, softer and sweeter, threading alongside without competing. The caramel doesn't wait long to arrive, pooling thick and warm while the hazelnut and vanilla settle underneath. Gingerbread nuances appear around the middle, adding a spiced warmth that deepens the heart. Then the transition begins. The fruity sweetness recedes slowly, leaving room for a powdery warmth that becomes the dominant impression. This phase lasts the longest, a warm close-to-skin presence that wears intimate rather than announcing. The full arc stretches several hours on most skin types, with the drydown remaining present but quiet, the kind of warmth you'd only notice if someone pressed close.
Cultural impact
Iaia occupies an unusual space in the niche fragrance world: a fruity-gourmand that doesn't apologize for being either. The fragrance offers sweetness without obviousness, standing apart from the typical niche approach to edible compositions. This straightforward take on the sweet-fruity-gourmand category makes it a distinctive offering within its house.
