The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Zara's #dystopia collection doesn't whisper. Ultra Glitch is built on deliberate provocation, fragrances designed to challenge rather than comfort. The name says it all: a glitch in the expected order of things, sweetness interrupting itself, synthetic materials pushed past conventional levels. Perfumer Guillaume Flavigny constructed this around three intentionally amplified molecules, a pastry cream accord, cashmeran, and akigalawood, each dosed to create visible tension in the composition rather than polite harmony. The result is a scent that feels deliberately uncomfortable in its own skin, where sweetness and smoke constantly negotiate for territory. It's the kind of fragrance that demands attention rather than asking for it.
The goal wasn't balance. It was the moment when a material stops blending in and starts announcing itself. The pastry cream accord brings gourmand sweetness at levels that read almost edible. Cashmeran adds a velvety depth that mimics the feeling of warm fabric against skin. Akigalawood, a proprietary synthetic wood, provides an earthy, slightly smoky quality that grounds the sweetness before it floats away. The result is a fragrance that rewards attention: layered, confrontational, and built to linger.
The evolution
The opening doesn't ease in. The gourmand accord arrives immediately, sweet and present, while black pepper sparks across the top like static electricity. There's no polite transition, the warmth hits at full volume. Within minutes, vanilla cream softens the edges, benzoin adding resinous depth as cashmere wood weaves through the heart. This middle phase holds for hours, velvety and enveloping, the sweetness and woodiness in constant negotiation. The drydown is where the akigalawood and guaiac wood take over, earthy, smoky, slightly animalic. Musk provides a clean halo that keeps everything from going too dark. The progression maintains an above-average longevity, the composition evolving smoothly from initial intensity through the refined drydown that follows.
Cultural impact
The #dystopia collection pushes synthetic materials past conventional levels, a departure from the polite, crowd-pleasing formulas that dominate mass-market fragrance. Ultra Glitch embodies this philosophy fully, with gourmand sweetness colliding against smoky, animalic depths in a way that refuses to play it safe. The composition feels confrontational by design, constructed to challenge expectations rather than satisfy them. It is the scent of someone who isn't trying to blend in.
