The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Serena Rivera designed Califerne as an olfactory postcard from a mythical island of fierce, sun-blessed women, a place that mirrors California's coast after a surf session. The fragrance captures that radiant realm where orange blossom drifts on ocean breeze and golden light warms salt-licked skin. There/Then paired this scent with artwork depicting a single, suspended moment: a woman standing at the waterline, the horizon ablaze. Launched in 2022, the fragrance reflects the brand's commitment to limited-edition storytelling through scent and image.
The note selection for Califerne rejects conventional pyramid structure in favor of a single, sustained heart. Orange blossom and frangipani anchor the composition in white floral territory, while piña colada adds unexpected tropical depth. Salt and moss create an unexpected freshness, evoking the feeling of sun-dried skin rather than actual ocean spray. White musk and vanilla serve as connective tissue, softening edges and extending wear into a quiet, Intimate drydown. This deliberate choice aligns with There/Then's broader philosophy: each fragrance captures one moment, one mood, refusing to complicate the narrative with unnecessary transitions.
The evolution
Califerne begins in medias res, the heart arriving fully formed without an opening act. Orange blossom and frangipani burst forward, their white floral sweetness immediately softened by piña colada. Salt cuts through, adding a clean mineral crispness that prevents the composition from becoming overly sweet. As the hours pass, vanilla emerges, warming the florals from within while lily adds a delicate, green-tinged complexity. Moss grounds the progression with its earthy, damp character, and woody notes provide just enough structure to keep the tropical elements from floating away. The drydown settles into white musk and lingering vanilla, a gentle fade rather than a dramatic shift, leaving a faint trace of warmth on skin.
Cultural impact
Califerne quickly became a touchstone for fans of sun‑driven, narrative fragrances, often cited as the signature scent of the Golden State Collection. Its coastal vibe resonates with West‑coast creatives, and it’s frequently mentioned in forums as the go‑to summer‑day perfume that feels both playful and grounded.
