The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Roja Dove composed this for his Imperial collection, a personal nod to British creativity and originality. Dove has a connection to the United Kingdom, and the brief was clear: build something enigmatic, distinguished, and true to his style. The Dua Brand later offered their inspired expression of that composition as part of the Inspired Expression line, released as an extrait de parfum that is vegan and concentrated enough to carry through long evenings. The composition itself reads as a dense oriental, with cinnamon, clove, and ambergris forming the structural spine of the fragrance. These three materials do most of the heavy architectural work, anchoring the sweeter and softer materials that surround them.
What makes this one worth pausing on is the density of the powdery oriental spine. Rose de Mai and orris root give it that soft, soapy halo, rounding the spices with a delicate floral veil that feels both vintage and immediate. Then champa flower sits alongside jasmine and violet, adding a creamy indolic warmth that rounds the spices. The cocoa note is what most people miss. It never announces itself as chocolate. Instead it deepens the ambergris and patchouli base, giving the whole thing a bittersweet undertone that keeps it from going sweet.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are bright and almost startling. Bergamot, citron, mandarin, and peach hit together, juicy and sharp, before the cinnamon arrives and tips the whole opening into warm territory. Clove comes next, adding a sweet, almost candied heat. The citrus quickly retreats and you're sitting inside a dense floral-spice haze, rose and violet powdering over the spices while champa flower adds a creamy, almost sunscreen-warm floral. The middle phase runs long, and that's where the composition does its best work. Then the base begins to surface. Ambergris and sandalwood take over, vanilla softens the edges, and patchouli grounds the whole thing in something earthy and warm. The cocoa becomes more apparent here, a bittersweet undertone rather than sweetness. What's left is a close-to-skin blend of sandalwood, musk, and vanilla, with the powdery orris root lingering underneath.
Cultural impact
Bergamot opens bright and brisk, setting a polished and crisp tone that feels immediately composed, while citron adds a clipped, almost aristocratic edge to the opening. Mandarin softens the entrance with a sun-warmed roundness, and peach drapes everything in a plush, velvety sweetness that prevents the composition from feeling austere. Together, the four notes sketch a portrait of restraint and warmth, offering a wearable composition that takes its pleasures seriously. The opening gives way to a spiced heart where cinnamon and clove tip the bright citrus into something richer and more enveloping.
