The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Taboo Green Opium launched in 2022, part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, and the name tells you most of what it's doing. It's a reinterpretation of Yves Saint Laurent's Black Opium Illicit Green, taking that signature coffee-vanilla hook and tilting it greener, fruitier, softer. The Dua Brand built its name on reconstructing recognizable designer scent profiles at a fraction of the boutique tag, and Taboo Green Opium is exactly that brief: take a known shape and shift the color. What shifts here is the entry point. Where the original Black Opium line leans dark and gourmand from the first spray, this version opens with pear and green mandarin. It brightens. It lightens. It lets you in before the warmer base settles underneath, making the familiar coffee-vanilla moment feel like a landing rather than a launch.
The fig leaf is the move that earns attention. It's not a common bridge between a citrus-fruity opening and a vanilla-coffee base, and it does specific work: fig leaf has a green, milky quality that softens the transition from the bright top into the warm base without losing either. It's the textural glue. The base itself is the recognizable Black Opium DNA: bourbon vanilla for sweetness, coffee for that roasted bitter warmth, patchouli underneath for depth. By pulling the heart toward fig and jasmine rather than the original's white floral sweetness, the composition ends up fruitier overall. Less syrup, more orchard.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the pear. It comes in round and dewy, almost like biting into something just-picked, with green mandarin giving it a quick squeeze of citrus brightness. That opening is the most different thing about this composition, the place where it steps away from its inspiration. It's fresh, a little green, and unexpectedly uplifting. By the thirty-minute mark, the fig leaf has claimed the space. The pear fades back, the mandarin is gone, and what you're left with is that milky, slightly vegetal softness that only fig leaf does well. Jasmine curls underneath, adding a quiet floral thread. The scent feels creamier now, less like a fruit and more like a dessert that's been left out just long enough to lose its chill. The drydown is where the familiar DNA shows up. Bourbon vanilla settles in warm and slow, coffee grounds the composition with its roasted bitterness, and patchouli adds a faint earthy weight underneath.
Cultural impact
YSL's Black Opium Illicit Green, the clear reference point for Taboo Green Opium, brought a striking caffeine-laced gourmand to the Black Opium lineage and earned attention for pairing the line's signature coffee-vanilla depth with brighter, more luminous green top notes. The Dua Brand's interpretation leans into that contrast, pulling the green facets to the foreground and letting them play against the warmer gourmand base beneath. The opening brings forward the green pear and mandarin sparkle with a vivid lift, then gradually settles into the familiar sweet, softly vanillic drydown that defines the family.
