The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Set Your Flames is The Dua Brand's 2021 interpretation of Fan Your Flames, a 2016 composition from Nishane, the house behind Hacivat and Ani. Where the original leans into a more herbal-spice complexity, this version pivots toward a coconut-and-rum warmth that softens the profile into something more liquid and more confectionary. The composition opens with a generous pour of coconut, almost edible in character, before tobacco enters and pulls the sweetness toward something drier and more savory. The name borrows its poetry from the original, a gesture of flame and invitation, but the execution is the brand's own interpretation. Set Your Flames sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a range of fragrances that reimagine high-profile compositions through the brand's lens.
What makes the composition interesting is the tension between the cream of coconut and the dryness of tobacco. Here, the coconut gets a boozy companion in rum and a smoky counterweight in tobacco, which keeps the whole thing from collapsing into dessert. The Chinese cedar and oakmoss in the base do the structural work, grounding what could otherwise feel like a liquid confection. The tonka bean bridges the two halves, adding a resinous warmth that connects the tropical opening to the woody, slightly mossy close.
The evolution
The coconut arrives first, sweet and unmistakable, almost lactonic, like the cream off the top of chilled coconut water. Rum follows quickly, giving the opening a boozy, almost frozen-cocktail warmth that saturates the first phase of wear. The tobacco surfaces as the composition develops, and it doesn't smoke, exactly. It dries things out, pulling the coconut from sweet toward savory, adding a darker, more herbaceous edge that changes the whole character of what's on skin. The heart settles into a balanced coconut-tobacco accord, warm and slightly spiced, with the rum now a memory rather than a presence. The drydown belongs to Chinese cedar, oakmoss, and tonka, a woody base that lingers close to skin for hours. The coconut never fully disappears; it just stops being the lead voice.
Cultural impact
Set Your Flames occupies a specific corner of the gourmand category, the one where coconut and rum meet tobacco without tipping into pure sweetness. It's the kind of scent that appeals to wearers who want a gourmand profile but not a candy-like one, people who reach for tobacco and tonka but want something with a tropical edge. The coconut-rum opening carries the composition through its first phase, a boozy, creamy introduction that announces itself without shouting. As the tobacco enters, the sweetness pulls back and the profile shifts toward something drier, more herbaceous, more complex.
