The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Punished for Crimes arrived in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's catalog, an Inspired Expression riff on Ensar Oud's Crime & Punishment. The premise is simple: take a composition built around rare oud varieties and dense floral layering, then reconstruct it so more people can actually wear it. The original is a heavyweight oud composition that commands attention, and the inspiration here treats that blueprint with respect rather than dilution. The floral and resinous elements remain generous, the oud remains central, and the overall architecture stays intact. What changes are the proportions, tuned for broader wearability across different skin types and climates. The name plays on the original, but the fragrance isn't a one-to-one copy.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the sheer density of the floral and resinous material. Blue lotus, Bourbon rose, jasmine, mimosa, ylang-ylang, and orange blossom form a white-yellow floral spine that most fragrances would consider generous on its own. Layering all six is a deliberate choice, and the heart reveals a complexity that rewards attention. Each bloom contributes something distinct, a different facet of the floral spectrum that builds into a layered, almost blend-like accord.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the fruits and the spice. Peach and raspberry arrive sweet but not sticky, lifted by ginger and black pepper into something almost edible. The coffee note is there early, not as a roasted gourmand accent but as a dry, slightly bitter undertone that keeps the sweetness honest. Orange blossom and ylang-ylang thread through it, adding a creamy white floral sheen that softens the pepper's bite. As the composition develops, the oud takes over. All three varieties come forward, but it's the Cambodian and Indian that dominate the midphase. The florals recede into a supporting role, their earlier prominence giving way to the woodier, more resinous core. Bourbon rose and blue lotus remain present though, lending texture to what could otherwise feel like a straight-up oud bomb. Jasmine adds warmth.
Cultural impact
Punished for Crimes occupies a specific territory in the fragrance world, one where oud compositions carry genuine weight and floral density is taken seriously. It's a fragrance built for people who appreciate the architecture of a complex scent, where each layer contributes to a coherent whole rather than competing for attention. The Inspired Expression approach means it draws from the structure of Ensar Oud's Crime & Punishment while charting its own path through the oud-floral category.
