The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pops arrived in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's Original Blend Collection, a line built on the house's habit of translating personality and taste into a wearable form. Rather than chasing a single archetype, the composition was designed as an olfactory tribute, a portrait built from the things someone might love: a vivid burst of mandarin, the snap of black pepper, the hush of aged vanilla drying down into suede and amber. The result reads as an original blend, not a copy of anything else in the catalog. Sweet enough to be inviting. Spiced enough to hold attention. Grounded enough to wear past the second hour without apology.
What makes Pops worth noting is the layering of two usually separate worlds. The top sits in bright fruit territory, mandarin CO2 lending a juicy citrus snap, the kind of extraction that carries more of the peel's natural brightness than a distilled oil. The composition leans into oriental territory below, bourbon vanilla, tonka, benzoin, Haitian vetiver, but the suede accord running through the heart is what stitches them together. Suede here reads less like a leather jacket and more like the soft underside of something expensive, the nap, not the grain.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are where Pops is loudest. Mandarin CO2 and plum hit together, juicy and almost confectionary, then the cardamom and star anise pull it toward something spiced and grown. The pepper shows up early too, not hot, more like the cool sting of cracking black over fruit. By the 30-minute mark the florals have settled into the background, jasmine and lavender reading as softness rather than sweetness. From hour two onward the composition changes register. The vanilla darkens, the suede texture thickens, benzoin and tonka start pulling the whole thing into resinous territory. Haitian vetiver keeps it from going too heavy, lending a dry earthy anchor that stops the sweetness from collapsing into pure dessert. The ginger, quiet at first, begins to glow from underneath, a low warmth that threads through the spice and the wood.
Cultural impact
Pops wears as a confident evening-and-cooler-weather option within The Dua Brand's lineup, the kind of spiced-vanilla composition that bridges casual and dressy without committing to either. Seasonal ratings place it firmly in autumn and winter territory, with fall drawing the stronger showing and winter close behind, which tracks with the warm resinous base and the cozy suede texture that defines its character. The cardamom and star anise give it enough spice to read as grown-up without crossing into aggressive territory, and the bourbon vanilla keeps the whole thing approachable.
