The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Origins of Tabac arrived in 2022 from The Dua Brand, a fragrance house that works in the tobacco space with notable consistency. The composition draws on a familiar palette of bergamot, tobacco leaf, sandalwood, oakmoss, pepper, and amber, and the result is a dry, structural take on tobacco that pulls from the tobacco-bergamot chypre tradition without leaning on sweetness to do the heavy lifting. Bergamot opens the composition with a bright, almost waxy clarity, and the tobacco leaf underneath carries a green, slightly sweet quality, the scent of cured leaf before any smoke gets involved. Oakmoss and sandalwood build the base into something earthy and creamy at once, while the pepper threads a quiet warmth through the entire arc.
The interesting move here is what the oakmoss does. In this composition, the base stays dry and structural, letting oakmoss act like the spine of the composition rather than a background player. Sandalwood arrives underneath as a creamy counterpoint rather than a blanket, offering just enough softness to keep the oakmoss from feeling austere. The bergamot at the top isn't decorative either; it's the brightness that keeps the whole thing from tipping into nostalgia, a clean lift that lingers through the early stages and quietly shapes how the tobacco reads once it settles.
The evolution
The first spray is brisk. Bergamot and citrus hit the skin with a clean sharpness that reads more like an entrance than an opening, the kind of brightness that announces itself without shouting. The pepper starts prickling through early, and the tobacco leaf arrives underneath, green and slightly sweet, the way good leaf smells before any flame touches it. The heart settles into something earthier, oakmoss pulling the composition into chypre territory while the tobacco deepens from leafy to warm, almost leathery, gaining weight and texture as the citrus gradually recedes. Eventually, the sandalwood takes over, offering a creamy, woody counterweight to the still-present tobacco, smoothing the edges while the oakmoss keeps the whole thing grounded.
Cultural impact
Origins of Tabac draws on the tobacco-and-bergamot chypre lineage, a category with a long and complicated history in masculine fragrance. The composition itself is a dry, mossy take on that tradition, and it wears well on anyone who wants tobacco without the sweetness that often softens modern interpretations. The bergamot-tobacco-oakmoss triangle is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, and the composition treats each note as a structural element rather than a decorative one.
