The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Italian Water II by The Dua Brand arrived in 2018, and its roots reach further back than the brand itself. The fragrance draws direct inspiration from Acqua di Parma's Note di Colonia II, a composition itself shaped by Puccini's aria Nessun Dorma. That aria tells of a princess in a cold room and an admirer who refuses to give his name until their lips meet and the light returns. It's a story built on patience, on waiting, on the tension between restraint and revelation. Launched as part of the brand's Inspired Expression collection, Italian Water II became something of a quiet milestone.
What makes this composition interesting is its restraint with citrus. Italian Water II uses Calabrian bergamot, grapefruit, and orange zest as a foundation rather than a fireworks display. The opening presents all three working in concert: the grapefruit contributing that sharp, slightly bitter edge that wakes the nose up, the orange zest layering in something rounder and more familiar, and the Calabrian bergamot holding it all together with its distinctive aromatic snap. The citrus doesn't vanish within minutes; it lingers, softening gradually as the hours pass.
The evolution
On skin, Italian Water II opens with a sharp, almost bracing burst. The grapefruit hits first, bright and slightly bitter, followed quickly by the orange zest and Calabrian bergamot, which add a warmer, rounder citrus dimension. For the first fifteen minutes, this is a clean, sparkling, sunlit fragrance. The kind of scent that makes a Tuesday morning feel like a Saturday. Around the twenty-minute mark, the basil arrives. It's green, slightly peppery, and it changes the composition's character without overwhelming it. The cardamom sits right beside it, adding a warm, almost smoky spice. Together, they create a middle phase that feels distinctly Mediterranean. The wood notes don't wait for the citrus to fully fade. Guaiac wood, with its subtle smoky-rosy character, appears around the forty-minute mark, while sandalwood adds a creamy, soft warmth beneath. By the two-hour mark, the fragrance has settled into a woody, slightly powdery drydown. Vetiver grounds the composition with an earthy, root-like quality, and musk smooths everything into a clean, skin-like finish.
Cultural impact
Italian Water II occupies an interesting position in the world of citrus-woody fragrances. It draws from Acqua di Parma's Note di Colonia II, a reference that connects it to a recognizable lineage in Italian cologne design. The scent itself is versatile enough for a broad audience: office-appropriate, warm-weather-ready, and structurally solid enough for evening wear. The composition moves through Calabrian bergamot, grapefruit, and orange zest at the top, opening into basil, cardamom, and guaiac wood at the heart, and drying down to sandalwood, patchouli, and tonka bean.
