The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Abercrombie & Fitch Perfume No. 1 launched in 2011 as a cult citrus-woody composition built on a brief that was almost disarmingly simple: tangerine, peony, pine, sandalwood. Four materials, nothing extra, the kind of stripped-down structure that looks obvious on paper and turns out to be remarkably difficult to wear well. The Dua Brand released Fragrance No. 1 in 2023 as what they call their liquid time capsule to that specific composition, an attempt to recreate the original accord note for note rather than riffing on it. What's worth noting is how little the formula actually does. There's no hidden spice drawer, no secret amber base lurking underneath. What you smell in the bottle is what you smell on skin, and the whole appeal lives in how those four materials interact.
What makes this composition interesting is its restraint. Tangerine and pine can easily tip into something obvious and room-filling, the kind of scent that announces itself before you've crossed a doorway. Here, the peony steps in to round the citrus without dulling it, and the sandalwood anchors the bottom with a creamy warmth that keeps the pine from reading as harsh. The tangerine stays bright without becoming sharp, more like the sweetness of fresh peel than juice.
The evolution
The tangerine opens the composition with a clean, almost candied brightness that sits on skin like sunlight on a white wall. It just arrives, already open, no waiting required. The citrus reads more like fresh peel than juice, sweet but with that slight bitter edge that keeps it grounded. As the opening settles, the citrus starts sharing space with peony, and that's when the scent finds its personality. The transition is gradual rather than abrupt. The peony folds into the tangerine rather than replacing it, softening the citrus into something rounder, more petal-like, with a softness that keeps the brightness from becoming clinical. The pine arrives not as a forest blast but as something cooler, more like the scent of a branch carried indoors, still green, still alive.
Cultural impact
Fragrance No. 1 sits in a space that's grown increasingly visible over the past few years, the world of scent enthusiasts who actively seek out reconstructions of older compositions they can't easily find anymore. The 2023 release landed in a community that already had a strong memory of the 2011 original and a built-in curiosity about what a reconstruction might actually deliver. The composition's clean, daytime-friendly character makes it the sort of thing that fits naturally into a morning routine rather than an evening occasion.
