The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Flagship II set sail in 2020 as a sequel to The Dua Brand's 2019 original, but this wasn't a retread. Where the first Flagship was a clean, musky aquatic, the sequel traded open water for the cargo below deck. The brief was simple: take the exotic spices and rare woods that once crossed oceans on merchant vessels and bottle that journey. Persian saffron and organic Thai agarwood anchor the composition, backed by cognac, brandy, and a stack of heartwoods that reads like an inventory manifest. Released as part of Dua's Original Blend Collection, the fragrance puts its weight on materials that traditionally anchor the spiciest, most resinous end of the category. The saffron arrives with a leathery, slightly bitter warmth, a thread that runs underneath everything else.
The interesting move here is the layering. Persian saffron and Thai oud sit at the center of the blend, and placing them alongside cognac and brandy creates a texture that's part drinking room, part spice bazaar. The woods at the base, teak, oak, cedar, rosewood, aren't there for warmth alone. They're ballast. They keep the composition from floating away into something purely sweet. Juniper and violet leaf in the heart add a herbal-cool tension that keeps the spice from collapsing into pure dessert. It's a structure built to carry weight, and it does.
The evolution
The opening is all business up top. Bergamot and grapefruit provide a brief, almost cheerful brightness, like sunlight through a cabin window. Then the saffron starts to work. It doesn't bloom so much as it spreads, warm and slightly medicinal, pulling the cognac and brandy into a sticky, boozy sweetness that coats the leather underneath. The heart phase is where Flagship II announces its real identity: warm spice, supple leather, and the kind of richness that reads as expensive without trying to. As the hours pass, the citrus fades, the saffron mellows into something almost honeyed, and the oud starts to surface from the base like something heavy rising from deep water. The woods, teak, oak, cedar, take over the final act, supported by vetiver that adds a dry, rooty edge.
Cultural impact
Flagship II sits in an interesting space for The Dua Brand. It's an original composition rather than a recreation, and that distinction shapes how it's received. Wearers tend to describe it in terms of warmth and weight, the scent of dense spices, boozy sweetness, and stacked woods coming together into something that feels substantial. The saffron-and-oud combination at its heart has a particular character, with the cognac sweetness and the stacked wood base giving it a profile that reads as cold-weather appropriate.
