The choice to make bergamot both top and heart note does something most citrus fragrances rarely attempt: it refuses to leave. Most compositions open with bergamot then pivot away. Here, bergamot leaf layers over the juice, doubling down, before guaiac wood arrives with its smoky, tea-like warmth to give the citrus somewhere to land. Amber in the base does the structural work, adding the lactonic sweetness that keeps bergamot from reading sharp or soapy.

The evolution

The first thirty minutes are pure juice. Bright, almost bitter green from the bergamot leaf, sweet-tart from the rind itself. Then the guaiac wood creeps in, and the composition pivots, shifting from a cologne-style brightness toward something warmer and more contemplative. The amber rises through the heart phase like a low sun, coating the citrus rather than replacing it. By hour three, the two materials have merged into something that doesn't quite smell like either one. The bergamot has lost its sharpness but kept its clarity. The amber has absorbed the citrus oils and reads cleaner, less powdery than it would alone. The transition feels natural, almost inevitable, as if the fragrance was always heading toward this fusion point. Later still, the guaiac wood settles into a quieter register, its tea-like warmth lingering beneath the amber rather than sitting on top of it.
