The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eccentric Gourmand landed in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around reconstructing the DNA of cult fragrances for a wider audience. The original composition it draws from belongs to Slumberhouse, a house whose work sits firmly outside the polished mainstream of niche perfumery, leaning instead into raw material choices and unconventional structures that reward curiosity over familiarity. Eccentric Gourmand takes a notoriously tricky note pairing, strawberry and white wine, and offers it in a format that strips away the gatekeeping usually attached to compositions this bold.
What makes this one worth paying attention to is the note structure. Strawberry and white wine together is a risky pairing. One reads as candy, the other as fermentation, and pulling them off in a single composition requires a careful hand. Here they coexist. The strawberry arrives ripe, almost jammy, carrying the sugary weight of fruit left too long on the stem. The white wine cuts in just as that sweetness starts to feel like too much, offering a vinous sourness, a faintly acetic lift, the smell of a glass that's been sitting open for an hour.
The evolution
The first spray lands bright and almost startling. Strawberry shows up immediately, ripe and slightly syrupy, with a wine-soaked edge that reads more like the dregs of a glass than a fresh pour. There's a candied quality to the opening, a sparkle that makes the composition feel bigger than the bottle suggests. Rose peeks through within the first ten minutes, powdery and a touch old-fashioned, grounding the fruit before it runs away with the composition. The rose here doesn't smell like a bouquet. It smells like the dried petals at the bottom of a drawer, faintly stale, faintly sweet, carrying the memory of something once alive. By the thirty-minute mark the white wine settles into the background, leaving strawberry and rose in a slow conversation. The sweetness softens as the composition dries down, the boozy edge retreating into something warmer and more diffuse.
Cultural impact
Eccentric Gourmand arrived in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, and it occupies a specific corner of the fragrance landscape that rewards curiosity and tolerates contradiction. The composition speaks to a growing appetite for gourmands that don't behave like gourmands, fragrances that carry sweetness without surrendering structure, that flirt with food-adjacent notes without ever becoming literal. Strawberry and white wine together is a deliberate provocation, and the fact that it works at all speaks to a perfume audience increasingly comfortable with dissonance.
