The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Década arrived in 2021 from The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. This particular release draws its blueprint from Xerjoff's Decas, a commemorative fragrance the Italian house released. Xerjoff built Decas around tobacco, benzoin, orris, and bourbon vanilla, a quartet that defines its character. The Dua Brand translated that architecture into its own extrait de parfum format, working from the same olfactory map but arriving at a slightly different emotional temperature. The name Década, a play on the Spanish word for "decade," nods to that commemorative spirit. The 30ml bottle carries the same structural DNA as its inspiration, presented in a format that keeps the composition accessible.
What makes this composition worth examining is the way four heavy-hitting materials share the stage without one swallowing the others. Italian orris root brings that cool, powdery iris effect, the kind that reads as suede and cold cream simultaneously. Tobacco arrives not as cigarette ash but as cured leaf, slightly sweet, almost fig-adjacent. Benzoin and tolu balsam form a resinous undertow, sticky and warm, the way amber resins behave in classical orientals. Bourbon vanilla grounds everything, sweeter and more alcoholic than Madagascar vanilla, with a boozy warmth.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are a citrus flash. Calabrian mandarin hits bright and clean, almost sharp enough to read as cologne, but it doesn't stay alone. Within minutes, the orris root pushes up through the citrus, and the whole thing turns powdery, suede-like, cool against the warmth building underneath. The heart phase, roughly 30 minutes to 2 hours in, is where the tobacco arrives. It doesn't smoke. It doesn't burn. It just settles in, cured and slightly sweet, wrapped in the orris powder and cushioned by tolu balsam. Tuberose makes a brief appearance in the mid-phase, white and creamy, giving the composition a floral softness that keeps it from tipping fully into oriental territory. The drydown, after 3 hours and stretching well into the evening, is all benzoin, vanilla, and musk. The sweetness deepens, the resins warm up, and the orris fades to a whisper.
Cultural impact
Década exists in a specific corner of the fragrance world: the inspired-by category, where independent houses offer alternatives to established niche compositions. For wearers curious about the orris-tobacco-vanilla architecture that defines compositions like Xerjoff's Decas, this is a practical way to explore that territory without the full commitment. The extrait concentration and warm resinous drydown make it a cold-weather fragrance, the kind of thing that earns its place in a winter rotation rather than a year-round one.
