The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cuìr de Oceanic dropped in 2020, part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The composition leans on basil, sage, and violet leaf to push the leather toward the seashore. Mandarin adds a clean, pithy brightness up top, lifting the opening with a juicy, almost candied peel that quickly settles into something greener. Elemi resin gives the whole thing a peppery, lemony undertone that bridges the bright citrus and the deeper base beneath. Cedar and vetiver lock it down underneath, their dry, woody character giving the leather a certain gravity without weighing it down. Less library. More coastline.
The green aromatics arrive first and stay present. Basil and sage do not just decorate the top. They frame the leather from every angle, keeping it taut and clean. Violet leaf adds a metallic, cool-green edge that reads almost aquatic. Elemi resin introduces a bright, peppery lift that connects the opening to the warmer base. That unusual sequencing gives the leather an outdoor feel. It never smells tanned or finished. It smells lived in. As the hours pass, the violet leaf gradually softens and the basil recedes into a gentler herbal hum.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all green. Basil, sage, and mandarin hit together, sharp and almost herbal-tea bright. Then the violet leaf arrives, adding a cool, metallic edge, the kind of chill you feel walking past a window unit in summer. Around the thirty-minute mark, the elemi resin surfaces. It carries a frankincense-like warmth with a peppery snap, and the leather finally steps forward. Not a thick, glove-soft leather. A thinner, almost papery leather, like the cover of a notebook left near an open window. The cedar and vetiver arrive in the second hour, grounding everything into a dry, woody close that lingers on skin through the afternoon. On fabric the next day, the vetiver is what remains, dusty and green, like the smell of a dock rope.
Cultural impact
Cuìr de Oceanic sits in a small but notable category: fresh, aromatic leather compositions. Parfumo lists Memo Paris's Ocean Leather under fragrances with a similar scent profile, situating Cuìr de Oceanic within a recognizable neighborhood of green-leather work. For wearers, the composition offers a take on aromatic leather that keeps the texture intact while shifting the mood away from darkness. It appeals to anyone drawn to leather but wary of the heavier, smokier traditional treatments. The composition finds its audience through its unusual sequencing, where green aromatics lead and the leather steps in later.
