The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Courage & Desire landed in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. This one borrows its bones from a 2018 release by Phuong Dang, one of the priciest niche brands on the market. The composition borrows heavily from the original: the aromatic spine, the warm pulse underneath, the drydown that lingers. What you get is a fragrance that behaves like its source but lives in its own register, familiar in shape but distinct in voice. Phuong Dang built their reputation on dense, painterly constructions where every note has weight and the whole reads as a single gesture rather than a list of ingredients. Courage & Desire takes that density and filters it through Dua's sensibility, keeping the bones intact while making space for a slightly different kind of breathing room.
What makes this worth a second look is the structural ambition. Twenty notes is a lot to juggle, and holding them together without losing coherence takes real intention. Here, the construction has a clear three-act logic: bitter, bright botanicals at the opening, herbal-aromatic layers in the middle, and a base of oak, cypriol, labdanum, myrrh, and vanilla doing the heavy lifting underneath. Haitian vetiver works through the transitions, earthy and grounded, giving the middle and the base a common dialect.
The evolution
The opening belongs to bitter orange and pear, sharp-peeled and almost medicinal, with cardamom and juniper already pressing in underneath. Before long, the structure flexes: clary sage lifts, nutmeg warms, vermouth adds a faintly boozy herbal hum, and lavender rounds the edges. This is the most layered the fragrance gets, a moment where everything seems present at once, each note audible and distinct. As the composition settles, the aromatic top dissolves into the base and the personality shifts, from herbal-spicy to something quieter, warmer, and more contemplative. Myrrh absolute gives it a meditative, almost church-like depth, the kind of note that makes a room feel still. Tonka bean and vanilla arrive without sweetness, more like dry wood that's been polished smooth by hand.
Cultural impact
Courage & Desire sits in The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, the part of the catalog built around translating pricier niche compositions into something more accessible. The 20-note construction reads as ambitious on paper, but the way it wears keeps everything cohesive, one voice carrying through bitter aromatics, herbal layers, and a deep resinous base. It's a study in how much a single composition can hold without losing its center of gravity, and that balance is what makes it worth attention.
