The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name points somewhere specific. Akbar the Great, the Mughal emperor, a figure the fragrance deliberately invokes. Perfumer and brand owner Mahsam Raza of The Dua Brand used that reference as a starting point for Akbar's Elixir, constructing the composition around materials that recall the era of this most mighty emperor. Indian saffron, Bulgarian rose, incense, oud, honey. The scent is described as one that transports the wearer to that historical moment, an extrait de parfum that captures imperial atmosphere through contemporary perfumery. The release year remains unconfirmed across databases, with some listings indicating 2020 and others marking it as unknown.
What makes the formula unusual is the balance between bright and grounding materials. The opening uses bergamot, orange, and pear, fruits that bring a clean, almost luminous quality to a composition otherwise built on spice and resin. Cardamom and Indian saffron arrive next, layered with ginger, and a substantial rose presence, including Bulgarian rose in the heart, weaves through the spiced structure. The composition also features frankincense and honey, along with a note that some databases label as turmeric, adding depth to the blend.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the fruits. Bergamot and pear arrive first, clean and clear, with orange threading through, and there's a moment where it could almost be mistaken for a bright eau de parfum rather than an extrait. Then the saffron arrives, and it arrives decisively. Indian saffron and cardamom build together with ginger, creating a dense spiced layer that gradually pushes out most of the fruit as the composition develops. Bulgarian rose enters as the heart phase takes hold, sweet and slightly jammy, sitting above the spice rather than buried in it. The heart holds with conviction, a warm haze of rose, saffron, honey, and incense that defines the middle stretch of the wear. As the composition settles, the oud and ambergris anchor the drydown, the vanilla rounds the edges, and frankincense contributes a faint glow.
Cultural impact
Akbar's Elixir sits within The Dua Brand's original composition catalog rather than its dupe line, which gives it a different weight within the house. The fragrance carries a Parfumo sillage rating of 8.4, suggesting a notable presence in its early phases, and it has accumulated a meaningful number of votes on Fragrantica, indicating sustained interest from the fragrance community. Among wearers, the reception centers on its warmth and the way it bridges bright fruit and dense spice, creating a composition that feels both substantial and approachable.
