The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Abstract Elixir arrived in 2020 from The Dua Brand. This particular release draws directly from Masque Milano's III-I L'Attesa, an Italian niche composition that pairs iris butter with tuberose and Mysore sandalwood. The result is an extrait-level composition, weighted toward the floral-woody center, a layered floral-woody floral that leans into the most expensive materials in the formula rather than spreading itself across lighter top notes. The composition reads as deliberate and unhurried, built around the texture of orris rather than around a bright opening that burns off within the first hour.
What makes this composition distinctive is the breadth of its iris treatment. French orris butter, Italian iris absolute, and Italian orris butter each contribute a different facet of the flower, the powdery root, the waxy fat, the more metallic green edge, and the butter accord sits alongside them like another expression of richness. The champagne accord through the opening also stands out: sparkling top notes usually signal a fresh, fleeting composition, but here the fizz reads more as a textured entry point, bright but not dismissive, setting a tone before the iris takes over.
The evolution
What arrives first is deceptive: a bright splash of citrus and neroli, almost like a cologne opening, fizzy and light. The champagne accord lifts everything, giving the first phase an effervescent lift you don't expect from something this iris-heavy. As the composition settles, the neroli pulls back and the iris takes over, French and Italian orris butter alongside Italian iris absolute, multiple expressions of the same flower stacked like layers of velvet. The butter accord is unmistakable here, slightly waxy, slightly creamy, giving the heart a candlelit quality that feels both rich and intimate. Tuberose absolute threads through without ever turning indolic, more of a creamy whisper than a heady floral statement, adding body without competing for attention.
Cultural impact
Abstract Elixir is commonly listed alongside Masque Milano's III-I L'Attesa, and the two share a clear note profile: iris butter, tuberose, Mysore sandalwood, leather, and oakmoss. The composition sits within a growing conversation around iris-forward extraits, a category that has gained visibility as more wearers seek out the rooty, buttery character of orris at extrait concentration. The fragrance contributes to that conversation by treating the iris as a protagonist, layering French and Italian orris butter with Italian iris absolute to give the flower a three-dimensional quality.
