The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tobacco is a divisive note. Some smell it and think of grandfathers and leather chairs. Others think of hookah lounges and midnight conversations that run too long. A Tabacum Affair, launched in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Original Blend Collection, sits firmly in the second camp. This is tobacco as atmosphere, not as nostalgia. The brand built it from both ends of the spectrum: tobacco leaf for that dry, herbal edge, and tobacco absolute for the deeper, almost smoky sweetness. The result reads less like a gentleman's cologne and more like a Friday night in a room where interesting things keep happening.
What separates A Tabacum Affair from the crowded tobacco field is the green running through it. Galbanum cuts sharp and resinous. Thyme and cypress keep the herbal thread taut. Grapefruit and citron add a bright top that almost makes you forget what's underneath. Then the cacao arrives, and suddenly the whole thing tilts toward something more decadent. The combination of fir balsam, oakmoss, and patchouli in the base gives it that damp, earthy grounding. It's a tobacco composition that refuses to be one-note. Sweet, green, bitter, warm. All at once, all deliberate.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to grapefruit and citron. Bright, almost tart, with a green edge from galbanum that reads like crushed leaves. Then the citrus softens and the tobacco moves in, not all at once, but gradually, like someone rolling a window down in cold air. The heart is where the composition earns its name: tobacco leaf and absolute layered over cacao and thyme. The cacao adds a dry sweetness, not the milky kind, more like high-percentage dark chocolate eaten slowly. Thyme keeps the whole thing from tipping into dessert territory, lending a quiet herbal sharpness that anchors the tobacco's richness. Oakmoss and patchouli settle in the base, grounding everything with that earthy, almost forest-floor depth. The drydown is where the fir balsam and oakmoss do their quiet work, leaving something woody and slightly resinous on clothes the next morning.
Cultural impact
A Tabacum Affair occupies a specific corner of the tobacco fragrance conversation. The combination of green and sweet notes gives it a versatility that suits both daytime and evening wear, both casual and more considered settings. The tobacco reads with real personality: leafy, slightly dry, layered with cacao and thyme in a way that keeps it from collapsing into one-note sweetness or smoky cliché. The opening grapefruit and citron bring a brightness that the heart and base slowly absorb, so the fragrance transitions from crisp to contemplative without losing coherence.
