The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cardamom has always been a kitchen spice pretending it isn't. A Cardamom Affair was released by The Dua Brand in 2020 as part of its Original Blend Collection, and the name is literal. Cardamom is the affair, the affair is cardamom, and everything else is showing up uninvited but somehow welcome. The choice of cardamom as a lead ingredient carries a long culinary and aromatic history, with the pod prized across cultures for its warm, almost minty brightness. The composition is built around CO2-extracted natural Indian cardamom oil, a route that preserves the spice's vivid green character and aromatic lift. The result is an Oriental Spicy extrait in a 30 ml pour that treats the spice as a centerpiece rather than a background flicker.
What makes this composition worth dissecting is the contrast between the spice on top and the cream underneath. The CO2-extracted cardamom is bright and intensely aromatic, but it sits above steamed milk, vanilla, and creamy sandalwood that blunt the heat into something rounder. The dual pepper treatment matters too. Pink pepper and red pepper together create a layered warmth rather than a single hot note, and the brandy note brings a fermented sweetness that rounds out the middle without any sharp alcoholic bite.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are all lift: Amalfi lime and bergamot cut through first, the citrus hitting before the cardamom fully arrives, and pink and red pepper spark on top like static electricity. The cardamom builds underneath, and by the end of the first hour, the spices are no longer accents. They're the floor. Around the 2-3 hour mark, the composition shifts into its middle register. The brandy accord sweetens slightly, the steamed milk note thickens, and suede leather emerges as a tactile texture rather than a smell, the kind of softness you'd associate with worn suede jackets or the inside of a leather glove. The cardamom loses some of its high-altitude brightness and warms into something closer to chai than to a dry spice cabinet. By hour 5-6, the drydown is doing the real work. Haitian vetiver and Indian patchouli push up through the cream, the sandalwood goes woody, and the vanilla takes over the sweetness. The cardamom is still there, but it reads as warmth now, not as spice.
Cultural impact
A Cardamom Affair takes cardamom as its centerpiece and treats the spice with uncommon seriousness. The CO2-extracted Indian cardamom oil leads the composition, expensive and vividly aromatic, paired with a 30 ml extrait format that signals where the brand's priorities lie: material over filler, concentration over compromise. The milk-and-brandy middle makes it a winter-leaning choice, and the spice-to-cream arc gives it a dinner-suit or date-night energy rather than a daily-wear profile.
