The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
22 Shades of Bleu Bergamot launched in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Hybrid collection, a line built on the premise that two well-loved fragrances can live inside one bottle. The target here was Le Labo's Bergamote 22, a cologne built around a single obsessive note. But The Dua Brand layered in the vintage smoothness of Bleu de Chanel Eau de Toilette, creating a composition that reads familiar on first sniff and more considered on the second. The result is a hybrid designed for office settings, the kind of scent that holds its shape across fluorescent lighting, conference calls, and the walk home afterward. On skin, the opening delivers a sparkling rush of bergamot brightened further by grapefruit and a touch of pink pepper that hums quietly beneath the citrus.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between two philosophies stacked into one bottle. Bergamote 22 is built around bergamot as the central note, with a composition that emphasizes clarity above all else. Bleu de Chanel, in its vintage formulation, leans in a different direction, smoother, with a depth that suggests warmth and wearability rather than sheer brightness. Putting them together means the fresh crack of the Le Labo original gets tempered by Bleu's woody backbone, and the Bleu gains a citrus brightness it never had on its own.
The evolution
The opening of 22 Shades of Bleu Bergamot is all bergamot, loud and uncompromising, with Sicilian lemon and grapefruit amplifying the citrus into something almost tart. Pink pepper adds a quiet heat underneath, the kind you feel more than smell. As the composition shifts, orange blossom and jasmine sambac arrive with a soapy softness, and the iso e super begins to do its woody, skin-hugging work. Over time the citrus recedes significantly, replaced by incense, labdanum, and a quiet nutmeg warmth. The cedar and sandalwood carry the base, with white musk and patchouli keeping everything close to the skin rather than projecting outward. The drydown brings a warm, clean woodiness with just enough amber to feel intentional rather than accidental. On fabric the next day, the cedar and vanilla still register, soft and dry, like the memory of a cologne rather than the thing itself.
Cultural impact
22 Shades of Bleu Bergamot draws from Le Labo's Bergamote 22 and the vintage Bleu de Chanel Eau de Toilette, two colognes that represent different approaches to men's fragrance, one built around a single celebrated note and the other offering a smoother, more layered composition. The Dua Brand's Inspired Hybrid line blends these two recognizable references into something that feels familiar but not identical to either source, making it appealing to wearers who appreciate both houses but want something distinct.
