The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shabab means youth in Arabic, and the name arrives with intent. Thana Parfums, founded in Dubai in 2023, built its Magic Elixir collection around concentrated fragrance oils, a format with deep roots in Middle Eastern perfumery traditions, now reimagined through a contemporary lens. For Shabab, perfumer Kevin Mathys structured the composition around a single ambition: capture the sensation of youth without turning it into a trope. The result leads with Turkish rose, supported by cedar and sandalwood, anchored by patchouli and musk. Blackcurrant and orange blossom open the composition with brightness before the florals arrive.
What makes Shabab interesting is the doubled rose, present in both the opening and the heart, but doing different work each time. In the top, it arrives alongside blackcurrant and orange blossom, lending softness to the tartness. In the heart, it stands alone with cedar and sandalwood, becoming the dominant voice. The structure isn't revolutionary, but the execution is careful. The blackcurrant keeps the rose from becoming precious. The woods keep the florals from floating away. This is a fragrance that knows what it wants to be and doesn't try to be more.
The evolution
The opening is tart and bright. Blackcurrant hits first with an almost sharp quality, softened within minutes by orange blossom. The rose appears early, earlier than expected, and stays. By the time the top notes recede, the florals have claimed the composition. Cedar and sandalwood arrive quietly, adding warmth without pushing the rose aside. Then comes the drydown. Patchouli emerges with an earthy, slightly bitter edge. Ambergris brings a marine-animalic warmth underneath. Musk settles closest to skin. The final phase is intimate, almost private, this is a fragrance that doesn't announce itself from across the table. Lasts four to six hours on most skin types, occasionally longer on oil-friendly skin.
Cultural impact
Shabab launched in 2024 as part of Thana Parfums' Magic Elixir collection, a Dubai-based house operating independently in the niche segment. The fragrance occupies a specific space: rose-forward but grounded by actual woods, worn close rather than announced. It appeals to a specific type of wearer, someone who values intimacy over projection, who understands that a quiet fragrance can say more than a loud one.
