The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Truong Chieu Sy designed Poème Noir as an exploration of losing oneself to something, to desire, to darkness, to the kind of sensation that has no words. The name carries weight, and the brief behind it pushed toward something specific: a fragrance that captures what happens when light fails and something else takes over. The Les Vanités collection provided the framework, but this fragrance went further, into night florals that bloom when no one is watching, into the warmth of spirits that burn slow. The whiskey accord is treated not as a fleeting accent but as a foundational element, integrated deeply enough to persist through the heart and into the drydown.
The composition centers on an unusual pairing: aged whiskey and night-blooming jasmine absolute. The whiskey accord functions as a foundation element here, integrated deeply enough that the spirit element persists well into the heart of the fragrance. Tuberose absolute and carnation absolute provide the floral counterweight, creamy, almost opulent florals that push back against the smoke and ink rather than surrendering to it. The jasmine absolute brings a nocturnal quality, a green-white floral signature that appears gradually as the opening settles.
The evolution
The opening hits as a single dense accord: tobacco absolute and whiskey, creating an atmosphere of aged wood and warm spirit. Leather, smoke, and ink arrive together, the full sensory package of something rich and layered. The florals don't introduce themselves so much as gradually surface, like creamy petals becoming visible as smoke thins. Tuberose absolute and night-blooming jasmine absolute emerge as the tobacco begins to settle, adding a soft counterpoint to what was sharp and smoky. Carnation absolute adds a spiced floral note that keeps the composition from becoming purely sweet, introducing an element of warmth that complements rather than competes. By the late drydown, the florals recede and the composition shifts into darker territory, oakmoss absolute, musk, and smoke settling close to the skin. The smoke doesn't disappear.
Cultural impact
As part of Sylhouette's Les Vanités collection, Poème Noir occupies a specific position in the niche fragrance landscape. The smoky-floral structure places it within the chypre tradition, with whiskey accord and nocturnal florals creating a character that sets it apart from more classical compositions in the genre. The interplay between rich tobacco, spirit accord, and creamy night-blooming florals gives it depth without drama, complexity without shouting. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
