The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lake Balaton is Hungary's largest lake, a body of water woven into the country's summer identity, its shores crowded with people escaping Budapest for something cooler, greener, closer to water. Szabolcs Szerencsés, the founder of Superz Budapest, named this fragrance after that place. Not a specific memory, but the feeling of it: the particular quality of air when you're near a large lake in summer, the way the temperature shifts as the sun drops, the mix of warmth and mineral coolness that makes a lakeside evening unlike anywhere else. The packaging reinforces that personal connection, the painting on the box is a family object, passed from father to son across three generations, made by Szerencsés himself. It grounds the fragrance in something inherited rather than invented.
The note structure captures the lake's duality. Grapefruit and saffron open bright and sharp, the clarity of open water, the metallic warmth of late afternoon light on a surface. The heart introduces jasmine, soft and romantic, alongside nagarmotha, an earthy material that brings a quiet depth. The base is where the lake truly lives: amber for warmth, Haitian vetiver for mineral earthiness, oakmoss for the green-brown dampness of shoreline vegetation. These materials together don't smell like a lake, they smell like being near one.
The evolution
The opening announces itself without apology. Grapefruit arrives sharp and citrus-forward, bright enough to cut through whatever the day left behind. Saffron follows within minutes, lending a warm, slightly metallic spice that complicates the citrus and keeps it from feeling like a standard fresh fragrance. The heart phase introduces jasmine first, soft, floral, a counterweight to the grapefruits initial bite, before nagarmotha settles in with its earthy, almost tar-like depth. The transition to the drydown is where Lake Balaton earns its name. Vetiver and oakmoss take over, carrying a mineral, slightly green quality that evokes wet stone and shoreline earth. Amber lingers underneath, warm and resinous, preventing the drydown from feeling austere. On skin, expect the grapefruit to quiet after the first hour, with the earthy-vetiver base holding firm for several hours more. The sillage stays moderate, present but not intrusive, the kind of scent someone notices only when they're close enough to ask.
Cultural impact
Lake Balaton captures something distinctly Central European, a region where summer lakes and citrus groves define the seasonal calendar. The fragrance draws from Hungary's tradition of herb gardens and waterfront escapes, translating that casual sophistication into wearable form. Grapefruit brings the crisp energy of lakeside mornings, while saffron adds the warm glow of late afternoon sun on water. This combination speaks to a lifestyle rather than an occasion, making it versatile enough for everyday wear without losing its sense of place. The fragrance performs well in outdoor settings, where its citrus brightness cuts through warm air effectively.
