The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Moonlit Mist is the olfactory translation of Zumirez the Bat, a character built on contradictions. Plush toy. Enchanted forest. Soft edges, nocturnal life. The perfumers at DSM-Firmenich had one job: take the fan-perceived personality of a bat who lives in mist and shadow and turn it into something a person would actually want to wear. The result is a fruity-floral that doesn't apologize for being pretty. Cherry and green apple open like a first impression you meant to make. Lily of the valley and peony follow, quiet, familiar, the kind of floral that doesn't demand attention. Cedarwood and musk anchor it. And then there's the Squishmallow Accord: a proprietary note that threads warmth into the drydown, a reminder that this came from something soft.
What makes Moonlit Mist work is the restraint. Fruity-florals often overreach, too much sweetness, too many competing fruits, a heart that collapses under its own weight. Here, the fruit layer is crisp and contained. Green apple nectar does the work of grounding the lychee blossom's natural exoticism. Wild cherry keeps it grounded without tipping into candy. The white florals, lily of the valley, pear blossom, are powdery rather than indolic, which means they read as clean rather than heavy.
The evolution
The opening hits clean and juicy. Green apple dominates for the first ten minutes, sharp and refreshing, with lychee blossom providing a translucent floral counterpoint. Wild cherry appears around the fifteen-minute mark, sweet but not syrupy, more suggestion than declaration. Then the florals take over. Pink peony blooms slowly, not announcing itself, while lily of the valley adds that soapy-clean powder that makes the transition feel inevitable. Pear blossom bridges the heart and base, giving the florals something to settle into. By hour two, the composition has shifted. Musk rises through the heart, adding warmth and intimacy. Cedarwood anchors the drydown, giving it structure. The Squishmallow Accord reveals itself last, a soft marshmallow note that lingers close to the skin. Six to eight hours in, it's skin-adjacent. Someone standing very close would catch it. The morning after, there's a faint trace on clothing: floral, slightly sweet, like the ghost of a garden.
Cultural impact
Moonlit Mist occupies a specific niche: fragrance for people who already have an emotional connection to the Squishmallows universe, extended into a category that feels natural rather than forced. The launch at Ulta Beauty in 2025 placed it alongside established beauty offerings, accessible to the brand's core demographic of collectors and fans who grew up with the plush line. The enchanted forest theme and the character Zumirez the Bat give it a narrative hook that differentiates it from generic fruity-florals, there's a story attached, and for fans, that story is the product.
