The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sicili Fragances was founded in 2022 with a clear mission: to translate the flavors of Sicily into wearable scents. When perfumer Mauricio Cerizza approached the brief for Sicili Cologne, he looked beyond Sicily's famous citrus groves to explore less obvious aromatic materials. The solution came through combining Calabrian bergamot with ginseng, a root that brings an herbal depth rarely found in citrus colognes. Rather than creating a simple refreshing fragrance, Cerizza aimed for something with architectural interest, using bergamot as the bright entrance and ginseng as an unexpected supporting element that would keep the composition from feeling like a typical summer scent. The result arrived in 2024 as the house's answer to those seeking a citrus fragrance with genuine complexity.
The choice of ginseng as an opening material reflects a philosophical stance within Sicili Fragances: that even the most familiar fragrance families deserve unexpected depth. Bergamot and grapefruit are predictable partners for an Italian fragrance house, but by grounding them with ginseng, the composition avoids the obvious path. Musk, meanwhile, serves as a neutralizer rather than a statement, its purpose to extend the citrus experience without imposing a heavy signature. The pairing rationale prioritizes continuity: bergamot and grapefruit share a citrus lineage that makes their transition feel natural, while ginseng bridges the two with its herbal quality.
The evolution
The journey of Sicili Cologne begins with bergamot, its citrus brightness arriving crisp and unapologetic on the skin. Ginseng enters immediately after, introducing a subtle earthy bitterness that balances the opening's sparkle. As the initial minutes pass, bergamot and ginseng begin their transition, and grapefruit emerges as the dominant heart note. This grapefruit carries a natural tartness, avoiding the artificial sweetness that plagues many citrus fragrances. The transition feels smooth rather than abrupt, as if the bergamot gradually yields to the grapefruit's juicier character. By the third hour, the citrus elements have receded to a whisper, leaving musk as the sole remaining presence. This drydown is designed to be unobtrusive, settling close to the skin and providing a clean, soft finish that invites reapplication rather than overwhelming a room.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Sicili Cologne has become a go‑to summer staple among boutique shoppers who value a crisp, unisex citrus that feels both familiar and slightly unconventional. Wearers often cite its clean musk finish as a subtle signature that sets it apart from typical bright colognes, earning quiet praise in niche circles and frequent mentions alongside the brand’s other Mediterranean‑inspired releases.
