Why it exists.
The beginning
Speakeasy is the kind of name that does half the perfumer's work before a single drop touches skin. Na-Moya Lawrence and Debbie Lin, the duo behind Samar, reached for a specific mood, one of low light and quiet rooms, and let the fragrance carry the rest. The composition reads as an atmosphere rather than a costume, a mood piece that sits close to the wearer and asks to be noticed only by those nearby. Samar released Speakeasy in 2022 as part of their roll-on perfume collection, the format that keeps each scent intimate and lets the materials speak in their own voice rather than projecting across a room. The roll-on delivery means the oils warm against pulse points, releasing their character slowly as body heat coaxes out each layer.
What makes Speakeasy distinctive is its refusal to dress up. Lawrence and Lin built theirs around a drier spine: French oak wood, leather, tobacco, and vetiver form the architecture, while elderflower cuts the sweetness just enough to keep things honest. The gin note is botanical and fleeting, more impression than ingredient. The result reads like a composition that knows exactly what it wants to say and chooses precision over excess. Each note carries weight without tipping into heaviness, and the interplay between the woods and florals creates something that feels measured and considered.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to gin and elderflower, sharp and botanical, the bright flicker of a cocktail being poured over ice. Then the rum arrives, warm and low, and the tobacco settles in underneath, less smoke than cured leaf folded into the composition. Around the two-hour mark the leather and French oak take over, and the whole thing tightens, becomes more architectural, less perfumey. By hour four it has settled into a quiet hum of vetiver, oak, and the ghost of tobacco on skin. The next morning, a faint trace of leather and rum clings to wherever you slept. The opening phase is all about brightness and lift, the gin slicing through with its botanical crispness while elderflower adds a soft, almost candied floral sweetness that rounds out the sharpness.

Speakeasy reads as a deliberate choice to evoke a specific mood through its combination of gin, rum, and tobacco, materials that carry their own cultural weight and history.
