The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Orto delle Spezie means garden of spices in Italian, and that title guided everything about this composition. Perfumer Julien Rasquinet built it in 2022 as part of Ferragamo's Tuscan Creations line. Rather than cataloging spices, Rasquinet approached it as designing a space: the kind of garden that exists in Mediterranean memory, where dates grow alongside warmer, more unexpected companions. The result is a fragrance that opens with unexpected brightness, the kind that catches you off guard before you've even identified what you're smelling. There's a quality of surprise in the top notes that feels intentional, like a host who knows exactly how to intrigue a guest before the conversation deepens.
What makes Orto delle Spezie stand apart is its use of oud in a way that refuses convention. This isn't heavy, smoky oud built for impact; it's oud that behaves, that lets the warm spices and sweet fruit do the talking while it holds down the base. The combination of dates, saffron, and nutmeg creates a sweet-spice accord that feels modern without chasing trends. Cedar and sandalwood in the heart give it a woody core that provides structure without dominating the composition.
The evolution
The opening arrives with saffron's metallic brightness meeting the soft sweetness of dates. It's a contrast that shouldn't work but does, the medicinal edge of the saffron tempering the fruit's sugar without killing it. Nutmeg stays close to the top, keeping the warmth alive. As the fragrance develops, cedar and sandalwood arrive to take over, the transition more like a door opening into a different room of the same house than a dramatic shift. The heart is warm and woody, with the cistus absolute adding resinous depth that prevents the composition from feeling too light. The drydown is where the oud announces itself. Not heavy. Not aggressive. Just present, a quiet foundation that lingers long after the spices have faded. The oud doesn't shout for attention; it settles beneath the other notes like rich soil, providing grounding without overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Orto delle Spezie belongs to Ferragamo's Tuscan Creations line, a collection that reflects the brand's Italian roots through its ingredients and aesthetic. What stands out about this particular fragrance is its willingness to be itself: sweet without apology, warm without heaviness, and anchored by an oud that earns its place rather than demanding it. It's the kind of scent that works because it doesn't try to work too hard. The composition feels considered rather than calculated, each element in proportion to the others.
