The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Magnetic Guaiac arrived in 2022, and the commission went to Pierre-Constantin Guéros, a perfumer with a track record for building compositions that prize tactile presence over obvious note lists. The fragrance draws its identity from guaiac wood and a fur accord, two materials that anchor the structure in textures rather than the usual top-note fireworks. The opening pairs bergamot with the brighter edges of geranium, giving the first impression a lifted, almost cologne-adjacent clarity, but that brightness is only the entry point. Once the composition settles, the guaiac wood deepens into a resinous, smoky register, and the fur accord moves from background suggestion to the dominant base, lending a close, thermal warmth that stays on the skin.
The fur accord is the most distinctive material in the formula, and the element that gives Magnetic Guaiac its signature register. It does not read as overtly animalic, nor does it read as a clean musk stand-in. Instead, it carries a warmth that suggests skin beneath fabric, a heat-trap quality that clings and sustains. The geranium at the heart functions as a counterweight to the base, keeping the composition from tipping entirely into smoky density. Guaiac wood provides its own resinous, faintly smoky depth, layering underneath the fur and giving the drydown its weight.
The evolution
The first impression is noticeably fresh, with bergamot and geranium arriving together in a bright, herbal register. The citrus reads crisp and lightly green, with the kind of sharpness that suggests torn peel rather than juice, and the geranium opens with a leafy, almost mentholated coolness. As the early brightness fades, the wood begins to surface, and the geranium shifts away from its greenest edge, softening into something more velvety and less botanical. The fur note moves gradually into the foreground, starting as a faint suggestion underneath the herbs and citrus, then building into the structural spine of the composition. Eventually the citrus disappears entirely, and the geranium recedes to a quiet aromatic hum.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 release, Magnetic Guaiac has drawn consistent attention for its unconventional use of a fur accord within a woody aromatic structure. The decision to center guaiac wood and bergamot in the opening, rather than a more conventional citrus or aromatic lead, gave the fragrance a distinctive entry point that set it apart from the more predictable designer launches of the period. Its use of a fur note, presented as a warm, skin-close material rather than an overtly animalic statement, pushed against the trend toward clean musks and uncomplicated fresh woody compositions that dominated the market at the time.
