The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
No. 23 Magnolia & Pink Pepper emerged from Rituals' 2013 collection, crafted by Vincent Schaller. The brief was clear: translate the sensation of a fresh magnolia blossom into something wearable and true. Schaller reached for pink pepper berries to add contrast, dry, slightly resinous, the kind of spice that makes a floral listen.
What makes No. 23 work is restraint. Magnolia on its own can tip into sunscreen territory, heavy, white, indolic. The pink pepper doesn't overpower it; it frames it, keeping the magnolia grounded and preventing that descent into sweet clichés. The violet and white lily layer underneath, adding texture without competing for attention. It's a composition that trusts its materials.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, pink pepper's warmth hits first, sharp and clean, before magnolia's creaminess spreads through. Within minutes, violet and white lily join the conversation, softening everything into a feminine heart that feels neither juvenile nor aggressive. The florals hold for about two hours before musk takes over, wrapping everything in quiet warmth. The drydown is intimate, skin-close, almost powdery, with just enough presence to remind you it's there. On fabric, it fades to a whisper within a few hours. On skin, expect four to six hours of gentle company.
Cultural impact
No. 23 holds a quiet place in the Rituals collection, discontinued but not forgotten. It appeals to those who want a natural, approachable floral with enough complexity to stay interesting and enough restraint to wear daily. The magnolia-pepper pairing predates the current wave of warm florals, giving it an almost prescient quality.
