The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ginza* was made in 2018 as an exclusive for The Conveni at Ginza Sony Park, a retail space that turned convenience-store tropes into a curated cultural space. The fragrance translates a specific Tokyo neighborhood into scent: the stretch of Ginza where the older layers of the district still carry the air of weathered wood and faint mineral hush from long before neon arrived. Moss, cedarwood, and dry sandalwood incense do the heavy lifting in the composition, giving it a grounded warmth that reads more like a quiet, lived-in district than a polished showcase. The incense notes carry a dry, resinous quality, while the moss adds a subtle dampness that recalls shaded stone and old timber.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the way its listed notes read less like a pyramid and more like a single woven texture. The notes, frankincense, sandalwood, patchouli, cedarwood, leather, vetiver, amber, musk, and moss, blend into each other from the first spray, with no citrus high note cutting through to signal freshness. Instead, the incense and leather partnership does the opening work, anchoring the drydown in a dry, resinous register.
The evolution
On skin, the opening arrives quietly, not muted but unhurried. Frankincense leads with a dry, almost papery warmth, while leather threads underneath without the sweetness that usually softens it. There's no lift of bergamot or spark of pepper to announce the composition; it simply starts where most fragrances end. Within twenty minutes, sandalwood and cedarwood take over, but they don't replace the opening so much as deepen it. The sandalwood reads dry rather than creamy, the cedarwood leans toward pencil shavings rather than pencil. Patchouli surfaces next, earthy and slightly dusty, and the moss arrives as a damp exhale in the background, a quiet mineral undertone that adds depth without changing the mood. By the third hour, the leather has softened into something closer to suede.
Cultural impact
Ginza* landed in 2018 as the scent bound to The Conveni inside Tokyo's Ginza Sony Park, a curated retail space that shaped where and how the fragrance reached its audience. Its incense-and-leather register reads as a quiet signal of affiliation with the retaW universe, marking it as part of the brand's catalogue of place-coded releases. The release came through an exclusive retail channel, tying the fragrance to a specific Tokyo location and a specific moment in the brand's distribution.
