The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shibuya* is a district. Specifically the Tokyo district that runs on neon, ambition, and Friday night foot traffic that never thins out. Launched in 2016, the fragrance is retaW's olfactory sketch of that grid, named for the ward rather than any single moment within it. The scramble crossing at rush hour, the air outside a konbini at midnight, the moment a stranger leans past you on the platform and you catch something warm underneath the cold. The scent was also developed in collaboration with Vanquish for their lifestyle line 'Vanquish City?', bringing a streetwear collaborator's read on the district into the formulation process.
The note list reads simple on paper. Bergamot, mandarin, mint up top. Vanilla underneath. But the interesting decision is how those materials meet. Mandarin and bergamot give brightness and a certain urban, almost electrical energy. Mint adds the cool green edge that makes the opening feel less like a citrus shower gel and more like air-conditioned space. Then vanilla, which in a different composition would announce itself, stays tucked low, present but unobtrusive, the way streetlight hits wet sidewalk: you notice it more than you see it directly.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are brisk and almost sharp. Bergamot lands first with a kind of squeezed-peel intensity, mandarin follows with sweeter roundness, and mint threads through both, giving the opening a clean, almost cooling sensation, the olfactory equivalent of stepping into a building after the humidity hits. There is nothing heavy here yet. The heart phase is where the shift happens. The citrus does not vanish, but vanilla begins to register at the edges, pulling the scent from clean into something with a slight sweetness, like cold milk or sugar dissolving in warm water. The mint recedes into the background rather than disappearing, and the accord overall takes on a warmer, almost gourmand-adjacent feel without ever tipping into pastry territory. By the third hour the citrus has gone quiet. Vanilla is doing the talking now, and it talks softly, a dry, slightly powdery vanilla rather than a syrupy one. On clothing the drydown holds longer and reads warmer than on skin, picking up a faint vanillin warmth overnight.
Cultural impact
Shibuya* sits in retaW's catalogue alongside Harajuku, Ginza, and Allen, a line-up of place-names and cultural references that reads like a map of Tokyo rather than a traditional fragrance line. The collaboration with Vanquish under their 'Vanquish City?' lifestyle banner gave the release an additional retail context, connecting the scent to a label already working with place-based identity as a design language. The result is a fragrance that reads as part of a broader conversation about Tokyo geography and the way different neighborhoods hold different energies, rather than as a standalone luxury object.
