The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud 71 represents a notable move into darker territory, a 2026 release built around the tension between a single material and a minimalist approach. The fragrance strips oud down to its most essential expression, letting one note carry the weight that a traditional composition would distribute across many. Bergamot opens the structure, sharp and uncomplicated, refusing to dress the oud in the usual supporting cast of resins, spices, and florals. There's almost nothing between you and the material itself, and that absence of ornament is deliberate. The bottle reflects the same logic: clean lines, quiet geometry, nothing decorative competing with what's inside. This isn't a fragrance trying to impress with complexity.
What makes Oud 71 interesting isn't the oud itself, but rather the collision it creates between two instincts. On one side, a material most often associated with smoky heaviness and dense compositions. On the other, a fragrance that refuses those conventions entirely, opening with a cold, sharp citrus that cuts against every expectation the word oud usually carries. The solar notes through the middle act as a bridge rather than a buffer, warming the transition without softening the character or rounding off the edges.
The evolution
In the early phase, the fragrance is all bergamot, and not the polite, slightly sweet version you'd recognize from a standard cologne. There's a sharper, almost metallic quality to it, a brightness that sits high on the skin and announces itself without apology. Nothing else registers yet. Then the structure begins to shift, and the solar notes surface, not floral, not ozonic, but warm and ambered, carrying a kind of radiant heat that has no obvious source. This is where the oud first becomes perceptible, rising underneath like a bass line that was always present but waiting for its moment. For an extended stretch, the fragrance holds this dual register: bright on top, dense underneath, the two registers running parallel without ever fully merging.
Cultural impact
Oud 71 occupies a particular position in the current fragrance landscape, arriving at a moment when oud has become both ubiquitous and heavily codified. The material carries strong associations with intensity, smoke, and dense resinous compositions, and most oud releases lean further into those associations rather than away from them. Oud 71 takes the opposite approach, presenting oud in its most pared-back form and asking whether the material can hold attention without the usual scaffolding of supporting notes.
