The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mayyas arrived in 2020 from Ramasat, a house that carries the tagline British Heritage Since 1971. The fragrance lives firmly inside an oriental register, built on a musk and oud architecture, but the proportions lean somewhere unexpected, pulled toward transparency rather than the dense, heavy-handed weight the genre often settles into. The composition uses white oud and ambergris in its foundation, two materials that carry resinous warmth without the barnyard pull or animal darkness that traditional oud can bring. Pink pepper opens at the top with a dry snap, benzoin and styrax swell through the heart as a slow balsamic tide, and musk anchors the base without ever announcing itself.
The interesting move in Mayyas is what it leaves out of its oriental framework. The base here uses white oud and ambergris, two materials prized for their softer, more translucent character. White oud carries the oud reference without the barnyard edge, and ambergris adds a saline, almost oceanic lift rather than animal warmth. Layered over benzoin and styrax in the heart, the result reads resinous without feeling syrupy. The pink pepper at the top adds a tension, a little snap of heat before the smooth materials take over.
The evolution
Pink pepper opens the show with a brief, bright bite, not fizzy but dry, almost like cracked peppercorn on warm wood. It's there for the first ten minutes, then it folds backward into the oriental accents and lets styrax take the stage. The heart is where Mayyas lives most of its life, a slow, balsamic swell of benzoin and styrax that feels less like incense and more like polished resin under lamplight. There's no sharp top-note chase, no green lift, nothing trying to grab you by the collar. By the third hour, the white oud and ambergris have moved to the foreground, and the whole composition drops closer to skin, gone from 'wearing fragrance' to 'smelling like yourself on a good day.' The musk at the base doesn't announce itself, it just takes over the space and lets everything else rest.
Cultural impact
Mayyas arrived in 2020 from Ramasat's Al Meydan Edition, a release that placed musk, white oud, benzoin, styrax, and pink pepper into a single composition aimed at wearers who wanted the warmth of resin without the weight of smoke. The 80 ml format put the fragrance in conversation with contemporary oriental releases designed for daily wear rather than ceremonial occasions. Its clean musk drydown and skin-close drydown gave it a versatility that suited both formal settings and casual environments, from offices and restaurants to travel days and evening gatherings.
