The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ralph Lauren built an empire on the idea that dreams are wearable. Romance, launched in 1998, translated that philosophy into fragrance: intimate, aspirational, deeply romantic. By 2017, perfumer Harry Frémont returned to the line with a singular mission, what does a summer romance smell like when it isn't trying? Summer Blossom answers with a composition that prioritizes feeling over force. No dramatic opening, no aggressive drydown. Just warmth, rendered in tropical fruit and cream.
What makes the structure interesting is the coconut water at the center. In perfumery, coconut usually arrives as a synthetic co11, a comforting, beach-adjacent note. Here, it's rendered as a bridge: juicy enough to honor the tropical opening, transparent enough not to overwhelm the florals that follow. The ylang-ylang and orange blossom absolute don't compete with the coconut water; they amplify it, adding a nectar-like richness that prevents the heart from reading as thin. The heliotrope in the base is doing quiet work too, its powdery almond warmth is what stays on skin the longest, even after the florals have faded.
The evolution
The top notes arrive quickly, guava and lychee open bright, almost juicy, with mandarin orange cutting through to keep things effervescent. Within fifteen minutes, the coconut water takes over the heart, softening the citrus brightness into something creamier and more intimate. The ylang-ylang shows up halfway through the heart phase, adding a tropical floral depth that feels like the moment a beach party turns into a quiet dinner for two. The drydown begins around the four-hour mark. Heliotrope and musk arrive together, replacing the florals with a powdery warmth that reads as skin-close rather than perfumey. Benzoin lingers at the edges, a faint resinous sweetness that stays on clothing long after the wearer has showered. On fabric, this fragrance can hold into the next day.
Cultural impact
Summer Blossom occupies a specific and beloved corner of the Ralph Lauren portfolio, the Romance line's most accessible, crowd-pleasing expression. It wears best in warm weather, performs reliably over 6-8 hours, and appeals particularly to those new to fragrance or stepping into the Ralph Lauren world for the first time.
