Phantom Legion landed in 2022 as a limited collector's edition, a special bottle for a house that treats its flacons like objects worth keeping. The name carries weight: a legion conjures formation, discipline, the collective energy of something larger than one person. A phantom adds the ghostly layer, the idea of presence without warning. Created by four perfumers, Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion, Juliette Karagueuzoglou, and Loc Dong, this edition builds on the architecture of the original Phantom, pushing into territory that feels both familiar and harder to pin down.
What makes Phantom Legion structurally interesting is the lavender problem, or the lavender decision. It appears in the top, the heart, and the base. Most fragrances use lavender as a top note, a crisp herbaceous opener that hands off to something else. Here, it stays. It evolves. The opening is cool and citrus-bright. The heart adds smoke and earth, making the lavender read darker, more modern. By the drydown, vanilla has softened it into something almost skin-like. That single material carrying the entire arc is an architectural choice. It's the load-bearing wall of the composition.
The evolution
The opening hits with lemon zest and cool lavender, immediate, crisp, almost soapy in the best way. That bright citrus doesn't linger. Within minutes, smoke enters the picture, and the lavender shifts from herbaceous to almost resinous, darker, grounded by earthy notes and a subtle patchouli sweetness. The apple in the heart is more texture than sweetness, giving the smoky lavender something to hold onto. By the mid-drydown, the vanilla arrives, soft, warm, the smoke still faintly present underneath. The vetiver keeps everything honest, a green-earth anchor that stops the sweetness from taking over. What remains after four to six hours is lavender and vetiver, close to the skin, intimate.
