The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black XS Potion for Her arrived in February 2014 as part of a duo, true love elixirs, the brand called them. Olivier Cresp and Emilie Coppermann built this one around a dark rose, the Baccara variety, known for its intense, almost wine-dark scent. Hellebore joined it, a flower more associated with winter gardens than perfume bottles. The combination brought together the familiar richness of a classic rose with something more unexpected, a note that felt cool and slightly unconventional. Together they created something that felt both intimate and slightly mysterious, a fragrance that suggested depth without announcing itself. The overall effect is warm but with edges that catch light in unexpected ways.
What makes this work is the hellebore. It sounds like a botanical gimmick until you smell what it does to the rose, adding an almost dusty, green undercurrent that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. The black sandalwood in the base reinforces that darkness, giving the fragrance a woody foundation that grounds the brighter notes above. Grapefruit opens bright, then gets out of the way. It's the breath before the dive, not the point of it. The rose and hellebore interaction unfolds over the first hour, with the floral warmth gradually softening as the woody base becomes more apparent.
The evolution
The grapefruit arrives sharp and tart, lasting maybe 20 minutes before the florals announce themselves. That's when the Baccara rose takes over, not a polite tea rose, but something with weight, almost velvety. Hellebore weaves through it, green and slightly medicinal. The heart lasts hours. Eventually the amber and black sandalwood emerge, warm and close to the skin, and the rose lingers beneath them like a memory. On fabric, this one goes overnight. Wakes up smelling like dark petals and warmth.
Cultural impact
The Black XS line has been notable for offering fragrances with real presence at accessible price points. These are scents that aim to make a statement rather than blend into the background. The Potion variants in particular have attracted attention for their distinctive approach to composition, using combinations that feel unconventional rather than safe. Rather than defaulting to crowd-pleasing formulas, they venture into territory that some wearers find intriguing and others find refreshingly different.
