The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Catherine Selig directed the 2025 relaunch with a clear directive: preserve the exact formula that made the scent notable. The original Cry Baby Perfume Milk launched in 2016 and has been unavailable since. The fragrance began as an accessory to Martinez's musical universe and eventually became something people sought independently. The 100ml Eau de Parfum format gives the fragrance a permanent home. The scent opens with creamy lactonic notes, fresh milk and powdery softness create an immediate sense of comfort. Jasmine and heliotrope develop in the heart, adding delicate floral complexity without disrupting the gentle character.
The most interesting choice in this composition is the lipstick note. It doesn't behave like a typical makeup accord, it's not powdery or waxy in the way rose or iris might be. Instead, it functions as a memory trigger, something that recalls childhood dress-up and powder rooms and the specific smell of a mother's vanity. Combined with the milk, it creates a juxtaposition: creamy sweetness versus something slightly synthetic, intimate versus performed. The powdery heart doesn't arrive immediately. It builds as the fruity sweetness fades, shifting the fragrance from dessert to skin, the smell of someone who just powdered their nose.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and bright, strawberry and milk collide with a sweet lip gloss note that reads as nostalgic rather than synthetic. Thirty minutes in, the forest fruits soften and caramel creeps in, not sweet exactly, more like something almost burned. The transition to the powdery heart happens gradually; there's no dramatic handoff. Instead, the fragrance thins slightly, becomes softer, more intimate. By the second hour, you're in baby powder territory, the talc note is unmistakable. The woody base emerges slowly from underneath, providing structure but never dominating. What remains on skin after six hours is caramel and wood, faint but present. On clothes, the milk note can linger longer than expected, some fabrics hold it into the next day.
Cultural impact
Cry Baby Perfume Milk launched in 2016 as a fragrance tied to Melanie Martinez's musical and artistic world. The 2025 relaunch by Portals Parfums brings the original formula forward in a 100ml Eau de Parfum format. The fragrance opened with creamy lactonic notes, fresh milk and powdery softness that created an immediate sense of comfort. Jasmine and heliotrope developed in the heart, adding delicate floral complexity without disrupting the gentle character. As it settled, warm vanilla and soft musk emerged, creating a lasting embrace that evolved throughout the day, maintaining that smooth, creamy character rather than fading sharply.
