The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kindness & Mischief is part of Poesie's ongoing project of naming scents after women and the moods they carry. Joelle Nealy, the house's perfumer, built this one around a familiar tension: the fresh-faced lemon that won't behave. Not the cleaning-product kind. The kind that sneaks into the kitchen, finds a bag of marshmallows, and refuses to leave. The cardamom sits alongside it, warm and faintly green, pulling the lemon toward something richer than fruit alone. Marshmallow and vanilla anchor the whole composition, a soft, sweet base that keeps the brightness from feeling sharp. The name does the rest. Kindness is the warmth underneath, the marshmallow and vanilla that keep things from going tart. Mischief is the brightness that won't sit still. Neither one cancels the other.
Five notes, and each one earns its place. The lemon blossom does what most citrus openings skip, adding a floral softness that keeps the fruit from going tart or aggressive. There's a quality to it that feels almost sunlit, not photorealistic lemon with zest and pith, but a cleaned-up version, the memory of citrus rather than the fruit itself. Cardamom sits at the center, present from early on, its warmth threading through the composition from the opening minutes forward. It never disappears into the background. Marshmallow here is doing something more interesting than sweetness.
The evolution
The opening belongs to lemon, bright and lifted, the first thing you notice from the bottle and the first thing that registers on skin. It's not a realistic lemon, no sharp zest or bitter pith, more like the idea of lemon, a sunlit, clean version that already knows where it's headed. The cardamom isn't far behind, warming the citrus from underneath within moments, and the marshmallow rises almost immediately to soften both. As the composition develops, the sweetness of the opening shifts from simple to layered, warm spice threading through the cream in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental. The citrus steps back gradually, making room for what was always underneath. What's left is a soft, golden drydown, vanilla and marshmallow in close conversation, with the cardamom still humming beneath like a held note.
Cultural impact
Kindness & Mischief occupies a specific corner of the gourmand category, the place where citrus and sweetness meet without tipping into either extreme. The cardamom gives it a quality most lemon-forward fragrances lack, a warmth that keeps the brightness from feeling sterile or one-note. On skin it reads as a soft, close scent, something that sits within arm's reach rather than filling a room. Wearers tend to describe it as light enough for daytime but warm enough to carry through an evening, the kind of composition that feels right for a morning coffee or a slow afternoon. It wears close, and that intimacy is part of the appeal.
