The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2010, Platinum J challenged perfumer Jacqueline Clemens to create a unisex fragrance for their experimental Mix series. The brief centered on accessibility and everyday wear, avoiding complexity for its own sake. Clemens, known for her restrained approach, opted to eliminate the traditional top layer entirely. Instead of layering notes to create an opening spectacle, she chose to begin at the heart, trusting that vetiver, amber, and bergamot could hold their own from the first spray without preliminary fanfare.
Clemens selected these three materials to explore the intersection of brightness and depth. Bergamot provides the necessary levity to keep vetiver from becoming oppressive while amber adds a honeyed warmth that rounds the composition. The absence of top or base notes reflects a philosophy of honesty: what you smell is what you get, no tricks, no staging. For those seeking a fragrance that feels immediate and unpretentious, the heart-first structure offers a unique proposition, a scent that asks you to meet it where it lives.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with no transition, plunging directly into a vetiver-amber-bergamot triad that serves as both opening and heart. Bergamot appears first, lending an initial citrus sparkle that quickly merges with vetiver's earthy, slightly smoky character. As the composition settles, amber emerges more prominently, wrapping the vetiver in a warm resinous embrace that softens its edges. This is not a linear progression but rather a simultaneous unfolding where all three materials exist in constant dialogue. The lack of a distinct drydown phase means the fragrance simply attenuates over time, the vetiver's persistence giving the final hours a grounded, meditative quality.
Cultural impact
Mix 18 has become a staple for everyday wear in South-Asian markets, praised for its straightforward citrus-woody character that suits both office and casual outings. Wearers often note its unisex appeal, linking the fragrance to the brand’s mission of inclusive, routine-friendly perfume. Its modest price and clean bottle design have helped it maintain steady popularity among young professionals seeking a reliable, fresh scent without the flash of niche releases.
