The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name arrives from history: Diane de Poitiers, favorite of King Henry II, whose presence was celebrated in the Loire Valley gardens where she stood out among court. The King gave her Chenonceaux, a castle that became her stage. DelRae found the flowers that surround the main flower of the composition in those very gardens: iris from Florence, where the finest oil is made. Yann Vasnier built Mythique around that iris, using it as the structural heart of the fragrance rather than a decorative accent. The result is a composition that distills presence into something wearable. A historical woman, a perfumer's interpretation, a fragrance that carries the weight of legend while remaining intimate on the skin.
The orris butter is the thing. Iris pallida develops that chalky, violet-sweet depth that defines the finest iris materials. In this composition, it does not compete with the florals. It underwrites them. Ambrette adds that herbal, slightly nutty musk that keeps the whole composition from reading as sweet. Combined with Indonesian patchouli, the base becomes earthy and warm rather than creamy. Sandalwood smooths the transition so nothing arrives or leaves abruptly. The result is a fragrance where each material has room to breathe while contributing to a cohesive whole.
The evolution
The opening hits crisp, mandarin and bergamot sparkling against green botanical notes. The citrus fades fast, within the first hour. Then the orris arrives and does not leave for a long time. Dense, buttery, powdery in that specific way that makes iris polarizing for many. Peony and jasmine lift the middle without brightening it. They soften. They round. The drydown stays powdery-warm as ambrette, patchouli, and sandalwood settle into skin. Longevity holds for hours even as sillage stays intimate. The next morning, something faint and clean at the wrist. The structure feels classical in its balance, using material choices that give it an unusual character among iris fragrances.
Cultural impact
Mythique occupies a particular space among iris fragrances. The chalky, violet-sweet depth of the orris provides a quality that some find immediately appealing and others find requires adjustment. The moderate sillage keeps the fragrance personal and close. For those drawn to iris as a note, the composition offers a sustained, powdery presence that avoids the pitfalls of both over-sweetness and harshness. The base of ambrette, patchouli, and sandalwood provides warmth that extends the wearing experience without overwhelming. It is a fragrance that rewards attention to its quieter moments.
