Heritage
A house, in its own words
DelRae Roth spent years as an art director before founding Parfums DelRae in 2000. Her career in design, most notably at Esprit, shaped her understanding of how objects communicate identity and emotion through form, color, and texture. When she turned her attention to fragrance, Roth approached it with the same editorial sensibility she had applied to visual design. According to interviews, her family recognized the inevitability of this transition, noting that her interest in scent had been a lifelong undercurrent. The decision to launch a fragrance line came after this extended period of creative work in other mediums. Roth established her brand in San Francisco, positioning it within the city's tradition of design-forward, independent companies. The collaboration with Michel Roudnitska, who carries his father's legacy in French perfumery, has been a defining relationship for the house. This partnership brought European craftsmanship traditions to a California-founded brand. Over the years, Parfums DelRae has maintained a deliberate pace of releases, with significant gaps between collections that suggest careful development rather than seasonal turnover. The brand has never pursued the volume or distribution of mainstream fragrance houses, instead building a devoted following among collectors and those seeking distinctive, authored scents.
Parfums DelRae treats fragrance as a form of memory preservation and emotional documentation. Roth has described her process as one of distilling personal experiences into olfactory form, creating scents that serve as records of specific moments, places, or sensations. This approach rejects the idea of perfume as mere cosmetic product in favor of fragrance as a medium for narrative and self-expression. The brand's philosophy prioritizes individuality over trend-following, producing fragrances that often occupy unconventional olfactory territory rather than chasing popular preferences. Collaboration with Michel Roudnitska brings a classical French perfumery perspective to this distinctly American sensibility, merging formal technique with California-inspired freedom. The house releases new fragrances sparingly, suggesting a belief that scent creation should be unhurried and driven by creative necessity rather than commercial scheduling. Each fragrance from Parfums DelRae arrives with an evocative title and concept, positioning the wearer as someone who values meaning alongside beauty.
