The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Seville oranges are a different proposition from the sweet variety, bitter, aromatic, historically significant in the region that gave them their name. Jérôme Epinette built this fragrance around that distinction. Rather than defaulting to a generic citrus accord, the composition captures orange in its full spectrum: zest, tartness, the fruit itself. Pink grapefruit and mandarin layer in to expand the citrus range, while neroli adds floral warmth without softening the edges. Cedarwood in the base gives the composition somewhere to settle, preventing the whole thing from evaporating in minutes.
The combination of citrus oils with floral and woody materials is a deliberate choice. Neroli and cedarwood act as anchor points, they slow the evaporation of the more volatile citrus top notes and give the composition a trajectory rather than just a fade. The result is a fragrance that behaves differently from standard citrus: it evolves rather than disappears.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, orange peel and mandarin hitting the skin like citrus oil in sunlight. The zest is immediate, the tartness bright. Within minutes, pink grapefruit shifts the character toward bitter and juicy simultaneously, while neroli adds a floral warmth that keeps the citrus from going sharp. The transition happens gradually, the grapefruit and mandarin receding as cedarwood begins to anchor. By the end, what remains is intimate and close, not a room-filling statement but a quiet, personal trail. Applied in the morning, it holds through a full workday on most skin, settling into a subtle skin-scent by evening. The oil format extends what citrus typically delivers, though it never becomes heavy.
Cultural impact
Seville Orange sits in a crowded space of citrus fragrances but distinguishes itself through photorealistic accuracy and the oil format. Community feedback highlights its layering potential, it works as a building block for more complex compositions or as a standalone brightening agent. The reception leans positive for those who want straightforward citrus without synthetic edges, while the longevity debate continues in community reviews.
