The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
I Like You In Velvet was conceived as a visual-musical sketch, a scent that could sit beside Mondo Mondo's sculptural jewelry. The brief called for an iridescent cloud of iris and carrots, a nod to the delicate glow of silk gloves and the bold splash of lipstick wax. Natasha Ghosn imagined the fragrance as an accessory in itself, something to wear rather than just smell. The absence of a traditional opening was intentional, a choice to make the wearer arrive already surrounded, as if the scent had been waiting.
The decision to build I Like You In Velvet around a core of iris, suede, and carrot seed reflects a philosophy of texture over projection. These materials were chosen not for their sillage but for their ability to feel present on the skin without announcing themselves across a room. Pairing suede with iris might seem unusual, but the combination creates something that reads as clothing rather than perfume, as if the wearer is wrapped in the scent rather than wearing it. Carrot seed adds an unexpected warmth that prevents the composition from becoming too austere, while oud and woody notes ensure there is depth enough to reward close attention.
The evolution
From the first moment, iris and carrot seed emerge tog ether, the latter grounding the former's delicate quality with a quiet mineral warmth. Suede builds gradually, adding texture beneath the iris until the composition feels tactile rather than airy. White musk introduces a skin-like cleanliness that keeps the scent feeling worn rather than applied. Woody notes and oud arrive as stabilizing forces, present but never heavy, ensuring the drydown maintains the same quiet intimacy that defined the opening. The progression is subtle, more of a settling than a transformation.
Cultural impact
Wearers describe the scent as a quiet artistic statement, likening it to a modern dance performance that feels both Intimate and slightly avant‑garde, fitting the niche‑perfume community’s love for unconventional pairings. Its emergence in 2016 sparked discussions on how botanical notes like carrot seed can coexist with luxurious suede, influencing several indie houses to experiment with similar contrasts and reinforcing the trend of blending earthy freshness with refined softness in contemporary perfumery circles.
