The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iconic was composed by CPL Aromas as a deliberate statement in oud-forward perfumery. Rather than treating oud as a base note to be teased out, the formula places Indonesian oud at the top of the pyramid, announcing the composition's intentions from the first spray. The choice signals exactly what kind of wearer this was built for: someone who already knows what oud does and wanted more of it. The scent is built around presence, around the kind of fragrance that fills a room before a word is spoken. Indonesian oud leads, leather and guaiac wood roughen the texture in the heart, and cedar plus sandalwood ground the drydown into something warm, woody, and architectural. There's very little softening between the notes, no sweetness cushioning the impact.
Iconic does something unusual with its structure. Indonesian oud opens the composition, which means the wearer and everyone nearby experience it within seconds. There's no bright citrus to distract, no aldehydic lift to delay the reveal. Leather and guaiac wood arrive to roughen the texture rather than soften it, giving the heart a bark-like warmth instead of sweetness. The guaiac in particular reads as smoke, a tarry, dry quality that adds depth to the oud without weighing it down.
The evolution
The opening is immediate and unapologetic. Indonesian oud arrives dense and slightly medicinal, the way quality oud tends to before it warms against skin. The initial impression is resinous and heavy, with a leathery edge that hints at what's coming next. The guaiac wood pushes through early in the wear, adding a dry, tarry quality that reads as smoke rather than sweetness. There's a burnt quality to this stage, almost like woodsmoke clinging to wool. Leather joins the composition as the heart develops, giving the fragrance a worn-in, second-hand quality, like the inside of a jacket that's seen a few winters. This isn't fresh leather or showroom leather. It's the kind that has absorbed years of wear and come out the other side with character. As the composition continues to develop, the oud softens but never leaves.
Cultural impact
Iconic occupies a specific corner of the oud-forward category: the one where the wearer wants oud without apology. It's a fragrance for someone who already knows they like oud and doesn't need convincing. The choice to lead with Indonesian oud rather than tuck it into the base gives Iconic a distinctive presence among oud-led compositions. The leather-and-guaiac middle gives it a rougher texture, one that leans into smoke and bark rather than the polished sweetness common in oud-and-rose pairings. It reads as deliberate, almost architectural, with each note performing a specific structural role.
