The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Daniel René has built a following around fig-forward compositions that walk the line between natural and modern. When LuNiche approached him for a collaboration, the direction was clear: fig, but done without the usual safe choices. No coconut sunscreen, no oversweet dried-fruit base. The result is Aziza Fig Yourself, a 2025 release that puts the green, milky character of fig front and center. René brought his signature spiced citrus to the opening, but the heart and base belong to the fig itself, amplified by milk and sandalwood. The name suggests self-acceptance, but the scent is more confident than whimsical. It's fig without apology.
The challenge with fig is that it lives in two places at once, green and lactonic, fresh leaf and creamy fruit. Most fragrances pick one and build around it. Aziza Fig Yourself tries to hold both, using pink pepper and Sicilian mandarin to lift the green note, then black tea and bergamot to bridge it toward the milk accord in the base. Sandalwood and Siam benzoin do the work of making that milk feel warm rather than cold or synthetic. It's a composition that asks fig to do more than signal 'clean' or 'fresh.' The material earns its place here.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, mandarin, pink pepper, a brief flash of orange blossom, then the fig leaf pushing through. That green note is immediate and slightly bitter, the kind that smells like you've snapped a stem. It doesn't linger long. Within twenty minutes, the bergamot and black tea arrive, softening the green into something more aromatic. The fig fruit emerges underneath, rounder and sweeter. The cedarwood arrives quietly, adding structure without dominating. By the second hour, the milk accord takes over, not animalic, just warm and close. Sandalwood and Siam benzoin anchor it into a drydown that stays within arm's reach for several hours. On fabric, the milk note lingers into the next day, faint but present.
Cultural impact
The fig note has experienced a significant cultural resurgence in contemporary perfumery, moving beyond its traditional Mediterranean associations to become a defining note for modern indie fragrance. Aziza Fig Yourself, released in 2025, represents this shift in fragrance culture, where consumers increasingly seek sophisticated, narrative-driven scents that balance artisanal craftsmanship with accessible pricing. The collaboration between perfumer Daniel René and LuNiche Parfums exemplifies how independent perfumery continues to challenge established fragrance hierarchies, offering complex compositions that rival luxury houses at a fraction of the cost.
