The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Agua 44.2 emerged in 2019 as a limited-edition scent tied to Loewe's environmental pledge. The name references the 44,200 bottles produced, each supporting a European beach-cleanup project. In-house perfumer Nuria Cruelles Borrull designed the fragrance to capture the crisp clarity of Mediterranean coastal mornings. The citrus top, aquatic floral heart, and marine base reflect a deliberate precision, characteristic of her approach.
Yuzu and kumquat were selected for their precise aromatics. Yuzu provides tart clarity; kumquat adds an aromatic bitterness that prevents sweetness from dominating the opening. The floral heart is built on lily of the valley and lotus for watery refinement rather than traditional white floral warmth. The base relies on seaweed and white musk for clean marine texture, with green tea adding a subtle astringency. The result is a fragrance that reads as sharp, green, and clean rather than sweet or tropical, precisely reflecting the Mediterranean morning quality Cruelles intended.
The evolution
The opening is yuzu and kumquat, a tart-bright citrus combination that establishes immediate clarity. Kumquat's aromatic pith adds depth to yuzu's clean tartness, preventing the top from feeling simple or sweet. The heart transitions to lily of the valley and lotus, a quiet aquatic floral layer that tempers the citrus brightness and introduces a watery refinement. By the drydown, seaweed and white musk ground the composition in mineral cleanliness, while green tea extends the green freshness. The citrus backbone fades gradually; the marine and green elements persist for hours.
Cultural impact
Agua 44.2 was released as a limited run of 44,200 bottles, each funding Loewe's annual European beach‑cleanup initiative. The eco‑focused launch resonated with environmentally‑aware consumers, positioning the scent as a small act of stewardship wrapped in luxury. Its marine‑green profile quickly found a niche among fans of crisp, coastal fragrances, and the project reinforced Loewe’s image as a house that marries artisanal heritage with contemporary responsibility.
