The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kulfi was born from Loreto Remsing's love of the Indian frozen dessert that shares its name. In 2012 she set out to bottle the rich, creamy texture of that treat, pairing the aromatic punch of cardamom and saffron with the smoothness of coconut and vanilla. The goal was a gourmand that felt both familiar and exotic, comfort food for the nose that honors its South Asian roots through a distinctly Californian sensibility. Working from her Northern California studio, Remsing crafted this small-batch parfum to capture something ephemeral: the way a perfect kulfi tastes of childhood summers, sweet milk reduced to caramelized perfection, threaded with cardamom and pistachio dust.
Each note was chosen for how it contributes to the illusion of frozen sweetness. Cardamom brings the aromatic punch that makes kulfi unmistakable, while coconut and vanilla create the creamy, lactonic body. Sandalwood adds a touch of elegance and staying power, and saffron threads through as a precious, slightly exotic accent. Remsing pairs natural absolutes with select synthetics to ensure the fragrance lasts while maintaining the organic, handcrafted character that defines L'Aromatica's approach.
The evolution
The fragrance begins immediately in its heart phase, cardamom striking first with its bright, green intensity before the coconut creaminess swoops in to soften everything. Vanilla bean arrives next, sweet and rich, while saffron adds its characteristic honeyed, slightly medicinal warmth. Sandalwood provides the final structural element, a cool, milky wood that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. As the hours pass, the cardamom fades and the coconut-vanilla sandalwood blend settles close to the skin, becoming a quiet, persistent comfort.
Cultural impact
Kulfi draws inspiration from the beloved Indian frozen dessert, reflecting a cultural bridge between South Asian culinary traditions and contemporary perfumery. The use of cardamom and saffron pays homage to spice markets that have historically been centers of trade and social exchange. By incorporating coconut and vanilla, the fragrance evokes the comfort of home kitchens where desserts are shared during festivals and family gatherings. This blend not only celebrates the rich blend of flavors but also invites wearers to experience a sensory memory of communal celebrations, making Kulfi a fragrant reminder of cultural continuity and the joy of shared indulgence across generations.
