The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Good Mood Is Loading joined KV by Kateryna Vel'menko's 2024 collection, each one named like a caption to a moment Kateryna Vel'menko actually lived. The name does what it says. It loads. Then it hits. On skin, the opening is a sharp fizz of citrus that prickles across the nose, almost carbonated, the kind of brightness that makes you blink. Within minutes, a wave of berry accord swells underneath, giving that initial citrus snap a juicier, rounder body. The spice comes next, not aggressive or warming but more like a fine dusting of pink pepper that hovers just above the fruit, adding a subtle shimmer. As the first half-hour rolls by, the composition settles into something softer and slightly creamy, though it never loses that underlying current of energy.
What makes Good Mood Is Loading worth a second look is the choice to anchor a spicy, energetic fragrance on Aperol and sea buckthorn rather than the usual citrus-aromatic playbook. Grapefruit and pink pepper give it that immediate bite, but gooseberry, blackcurrant leaf, and sea buckthorn push the fruit toward something tart and almost wild, less cocktail-sweet and more hedgerow-fresh. Sage and Haitian vetiver keep it from floating away. The combination lands in a territory between a spritz and a statement, which is a narrow tightrope and not every composition manages the crossing.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all noise. Grapefruit and Aperol land loud and sweet-bitter, and pink pepper sparks on top like static electricity. It smells like someone squeezing a citrus wedge directly over a pepper grinder. Then it calms. The berries, gooseberry and sea buckthorn and blackcurrant leaf, take over the conversation around the twenty-minute mark, and the fruit deepens from sharp to jammy without ever losing its edge. Sage threads through the middle, green and dry, doing the quiet work of keeping everything from collapsing into sweetness. By hour two, Haitian vetiver has fully arrived, and the composition settles into its true center: fruity, yes, but with a smoky, rooty spine that grounds the whole thing. The drydown stays there for hours, warm and slightly herbal, the berries now cooked down to a whisper while the vetiver keeps watch. On clothes the next morning, that vetiver-spice combination lingers like the afterimage of a good day.
Cultural impact
Good Mood Is Loading reads as the brighter, more awake entry among KV's lineup. The composition opens with a near-carbonated burst of citrus, sharp and instant, the kind of brightness that feels like opening a window first thing. The fruit notes come through quickly: not candied, not syrupy, but closer to the tart snap of biting into a fresh berry still cool from the fridge. A fine dusting of pink pepper threads through the top, adding just enough heat to keep the sweetness honest. As it wears, the citrus softens and the berry gets rounder, settling into a gentler skin scent that still carries that original current of energy.
